Netflix Cancels ‘Ransom Canyon’ After Two Seasons

The Texas romance drama starring Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly will not return for a third season despite ending its second installment with the main couple together.

Netflix has decided to end Ransom Canyon after two seasons, bringing the Texas-set romantic drama starring Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly to a close.

The decision comes roughly seven weeks after Season 2 arrived on the streaming service on July 23.

The series was adapted from Jodi Thomas’ novels and centered on the complicated relationship between longtime friends and former lovers Staten Kirkland and Quinn O’Grady, played by Duhamel and Kelly.

Season 2 Failed to Match the First Season’s Audience

Ransom Canyon had already faced an uncertain future following its first season.

Although the show’s debut attracted respectable viewing numbers, it did not become a major Netflix hit. The streamer eventually renewed the series for another season more than two months after its initial premiere.

Season 2 was ordered with eight episodes, compared with 10 in the first season. The second installment also underwent creative changes, including adjustments to the supporting cast.

Despite those changes, Season 2 struggled to maintain the audience generated by the show’s debut.

According to reported Netflix viewing figures, the second season collected 4.1 million views during its opening week, a significant decline from the 7.2 million views recorded by Season 1 during its first week.

The series did briefly return to Netflix’s weekly Top 10 list, but it remained there for only three weeks. Season 1 had spent four weeks in the ranking.

For Netflix, that performance appears to have been insufficient when weighed against the production costs associated with the series and its recognizable leading stars.

The Story Ended on a Positive Note for Staten and Quinn

Despite the cancellation, viewers were not left with the kind of dramatic cliffhanger that often accompanies an unexpected series ending.

The central romance between Staten and Quinn had once again been tested throughout Season 2.

Quinn became briefly engaged to another man, creating another obstacle between the longtime friends. However, by the conclusion of the season, Staten and Quinn had managed to find their way back to each other.

That marked a notable difference from the first season, which ended with the pair separated.

The second-season finale instead left the couple in a relatively stable place, giving fans at least some closure.

Several Storylines Were Still Open

While Staten and Quinn’s relationship reached a happier point, the finale left room for additional stories.

Ellie, played by Marianly Tejada, appeared to be heading toward another complicated romantic situation, potentially setting up a love triangle.

The show also introduced the possibility of a larger role for Levi, Staten’s half-brother, portrayed by Steve Howey.

Levi had only limited screen time during the second season, but the character could have become more important if the series had been renewed.

Minka Kelly’s Pay Fight Became Part of the Show’s History

One notable aspect of Ransom Canyon‘s production involved Kelly’s negotiations with Netflix.

When she was offered the female lead opposite Duhamel in 2022, Kelly reportedly pushed for compensation closer to her male co-star’s pay.

She did not ultimately receive complete pay parity, but she came close, and the actress publicly praised Netflix’s response to her request.

Her decision to push for greater pay equity came during a period when the television industry was dealing with significant contraction following the pandemic and the end of the peak-TV boom.

Netflix Has Renewed Other Second-Season Shows

The cancellation also comes despite Netflix renewing several other sophomore series that experienced comparable or even larger declines in their second-season premiere audiences.

Shows such as Running Point, The Four Seasons, The Gentlemen, Avatar: The Last Airbender and A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder have all received third-season renewals despite substantial year-over-year drops in their opening-week viewership.

That highlights how Netflix’s renewal decisions involve more than simply looking at whether a show’s audience falls between seasons.

Production costs, overall viewing performance, audience retention and the value of continuing a particular series can all factor into the decision.

What ‘Ransom Canyon’ Was About

Set in a small Texas community, Ransom Canyon followed the intertwined lives of ranching families while exploring romance, family conflict and the future of the town’s traditional way of life.

At the heart of the story were Staten and Quinn, whose relationship repeatedly suffered from bad timing and complicated circumstances.

Season 2 expanded the drama by examining rivalries between ranching families, shifting romantic relationships and questions about the future of a community built around ranching and agriculture.

April Blair served as creator and showrunner, while Duhamel and Kelly were among the executive producers.

After two seasons, however, the story of Ransom Canyon will remain where the second-season finale left it — with Staten and Quinn finally together and several potential storylines left unexplored.
